Many news publishing related trends built up speed and began taking hold in 2010, and are worth watching and considering further in 2011.

In no particular order, those trends are:

Coupons and daily deals

Leading the pack in 2010 was Chicago-based Internet coupon service Groupon Inc., which turned down a US$6 billion buyout offer from Google in early December and secured $500 million (of $950 million) at the end of the month.

Publishers around the globe are trying out Groupon-like daily deals as a way to engage readers, and are beginning to see success.

Social networking

If 2009 was the year your mom joined Facebook, then 2010 was the year everyone else did, from your grandfather to your 12-year-old niece.

German company WAZ Mediengruppe sold its Bulgarian publishing arm, including leading dailies Trud, 24 Chasa and weekly 168 Chasa, Expatica.com reported today.

Although financial details were not disclosed, WAZ said Vienna-based BG Privateinvest GmbH had agreed to buy the two daily newspapers, seven weeklies, 10 magazines, its printing facility in Sofia and its distribution company named Stella, Novinite.com revealed.

"WAZ's decision to leave Bulgaria... comes less than six months after the German group sold its newspaper business in neighboring Serbia," Expatica.com explained.

The German media group entered the Bulgarian market in 1997, when it bought Trud and 24 Chasa, ABC.es pointed out. These newspapers have a circulation of 70,000 and 55,000 copies, respectively.

Newspapers are still looking for the right model for their online paywalls.

News of The World, the latest News International papers to go behind a paywall (the others two being the Times and the Sunday Times, which became paid-only websites in July) has seen a 59 per cent decrease in unique users to its website in November, after the first full month behind a paywall, the Beehive reported, citing comScore data.

"New research from Experian Hitwise suggests that 54,000 people a month are accessing content behind the paywall of The Times", Press Gazette reported.The article refers to research commissioned by Guardian News and Media, which was published internally by the company yesterday.

The GNM memo says, as Press Gazette reported, that they "estimate that a total of about 54,000 people globally are accessing content behind the paywall on the Times [and Sunday Times] website each month. Of the 54,000, approximately 28,000 are specifically paying for digital content. The remainder are print subscribers who get free access to the site as part of their newspaper subscription package."

The Washington Post has no plans, for now, to install a paywall but is following closely the subscription models that its rivals are implementing, MediaPost.com revealed on Monday.

"On pay models, obviously what The New York Times is doing is of interest to us," said CEO of Washington Post Co. Donald Graham during the UBS 38th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference, Agence France Press reported.

The New York Times is expected to start charging for some of its content on January 2011. Visitors will be able to access certain number of articles for free, after which they will have to pay a fee. According to media reports, those who subscribe to the print edition will have free access.

"We're not going to be pioneers on those experiments, but we'll be watching everyone ... we're quite willing to be followers on this front," Graham said. If paywalls prove to be successful revenue streams, WaPo might implement them.

In order to cut its debt, Slovenian beverage firm Pivovarna Lasko has decided to sell its publishing arm, Delo d.d., which owns two of the most popular newspapers in the country, BusinessWeek reported.

Last Tuesday, the company put ads in The Financial Times as well as Delo, its flagship publication, saying it would receive non-binding bids until December 14, Bloomberg pointed out. The sale is expected to take place next year.

Pivovarna Lasko announced the sale in October as part of "its strategic plan to withdraw from the media sector and focus on its core business, which is the production and sale of beverages," explained the Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Entrepreneurship and Foreign Investments.

The publishing company, which was bought in 2007 for $117 million, also owns tabloid Slovenske Novice, magazine Nedelo and a cultural biweekly called Pogledi, BusinessWeek reminded.

As the holidays approach, gift giving - and online buying - are in full swing. Publishers selling products, from subscriptions to travel packages to household items, can only better their businesses by making their sites easier and safer to use.

Scott Smigler, founder and president of Internet marketing company Exclusive Concepts, Inc., which specialises in small to mid-sized online retailers, wrote a checklist of advice for those selling online. His advice, featured on Mashable.com, states that one of the most important things retailers can do is make sure quality control is utmost. This includes making sure customers understand the site is secure, easy to use, is error-free, and loads quickly on all types of browsers.

News Corp.'s COO may be getting frustrated with the financial performance of MySpace - so much so that he admitted Monday at the Reuters Global Media Summit that he is open to selling or partnering with another company, paidContent reported. In fact, revamping MySpace could be the first step towards successfully selling the social networking site, Reuters pointed out.

"There are opportunities here to do 20 things (with MySpace) but that doesn't mean you're going to do any of the 20. If there's something there that makes sense you ought to think about it," said COO Chase Carey, according to Reuters. However, merging MySpace with another company before revamping it could be difficult, and "would have undervalued it against what we think it could be."

Less than a month ago, Carey said in an earnings call that the social networking site's losses were "not acceptable or sustainable" and that the company must "make real headway in the coming quarters to get this business to a sustainable level," according to Wall Street Journal Blogs.

Global sales of "street" papers, which includes magazines and newspapers sold by homeless vendors, increased 10 percent in the last year, according to the latest data provided by the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), Journalism.co.uk reported Monday.

Readership of the 155 publications, which are sold in 40 countries and offered in 24 languages, also increased from 4.8 million in 2009 to 5.3 million in 2010. The INSP stated in a press release that the major growths were reported in North America, Europe and Asia.

"Any increases in paid-for circulation--and certainly on this scale--are counter to current trends in the magazine market, across nearly all mature economies," said media analyst Douglas McCabe, who described the figures as "impressive."

Furthermore, the INSP reminded that 10 new titles were added in the last year, allmediascotland.com reported. According to Journalism.co.uk, the network sells homeless the publications for a cost price allowing them to resale them at the cover price and to keep the profit.
